Oprah Winfrey on turning 60: I'm more secure in being myself now

Oprah Winfrey on turning 60: I'm more secure in being myself now
Oprah Winfrey turned 60 on January 29.
Talk show host Oprah Winfrey, who celebrated her 60th birthday on January 29, feels more secure in life at this age.

Winfrey wrote a letter in her The Oprah magazine recalling some of her biggest moments in life so far, reported Us magazine.

"I'm turning 60. I'm alive. Healthy. Strong. I'm turning 60, and -- please don't take offense -- I no longer have to be concerned about what anyone thinks of me! I'm turning 60, and I've earned the right to be just as I am. I'm more secure in being myself than I've ever been," Oprah Winfrey wrote.

The Butler actress said that even in her darkest moments she remained optimistic.

"Even in my darkest moments -- through sexual abuse, a pregnancy at 14, lies and betrayals -- I remained faithful, hopeful, and open to seeing the best in people, regardless of whether they were showing me their worst.

I stayed open to believing that no matter how hard the climb, there is always a way to let in a sliver of light to illuminate the path forward. I approach this milestone, the landmark of 60, with humility, supreme thanksgiving, and joy. Knowing for sure grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home."

Kanye West angry after Kim is rejected for magazine cover

Kanye West angry after Kim is rejected for magazine cover
Kanye says it was Kim’s dream to be on the magazine cover.
Rapper Kanye West has allegedly confronted a magazine editor after Lena Dunham was picked over his fiancee Kim Kardashian for the cover of its February edition.

The 36-year-old rapper feels insulted that Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who he deems a close friend of his, picked Dunham over Kim, reported Radar online.

"Kanye, who met with Anna at the Beverly Hills Polo Lounge, argued that Kim is just as talented as Lena, if not more so," a source said.

"To Kanye it's insulting that his friend Anna is still refusing to even consider putting Kim on the cover of Vogue. He thinks Anna is listening to a bunch of 'know-nothing' corporate haters, as he put it. He's upset that Anna isn't willing to do him this personal favour and put Kim on the cover," the source added.

"Kanye knows that it's always been a huge dream of Kim's to be on the Vogue cover and Kanye wants to make it come true. If nothing else, Kanye is persistent."

However, it was previously revealed that Anna, 64, hates Kim - who has seven-month-old daughter North with Kanye - so much that she even banned her from attending the Met Gala in New York in 2012.

Jared Leto amazed by Oscar nomination

Jared Leto amazed by Oscar nomination
Jared Leto has already won Golden Globe and SAG awards for his role in the movie Dallas Buyers Club.
Singer-actor Jared Leto is finding it difficult to process the critical acclaim he has received for his performance in Oscar-nominated movie Dallas Buyers Club alongside Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner.

Jared Leto, 42, was excited when he was offered the role of Rayon, a transgender woman with HIV, which has gone on to receive six Academy Award nominations, reported Contactmusic.

Jared Leto, who put his acting career on hold for over six years to release music with his band Thirty Seconds To Mars - is in the running for the best supporting actor prize and he says the acclaim he is receiving for the role proves he was right to end his film hiatus for the project.

"It took six years for this to come to me. I wasn't looking to make a film but I ended up reading the script and fell in love (with it). I don't want to sound like a jerk right now but someone told me yesterday that I've won over 30 awards for it already. I didn't even know there were 30 awards to win. The big ones were the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards recently," Jared Leto said.

Referring to his Oscar nomination, he added, "I feel like this is insane and amazing - I feel like the luckiest person in the world. It's a really special story and I feel proud to be a part of it."

Jared Leto had to dress as a woman and lose weight for his portrayal of Rayon and his transformation was so stark he didn't think audiences would even recognise him on screen.

"It's pretty crazy. I play a transgender woman. A lot of people wouldn't recognise me in the role."

Sidharth Malhotra: Varun Dhawan has a great sense of comedy

Sidharth Malhotra: Varun Dhawan has a great sense of comedy
Sidharth says he can’t do the kind of comedy Varun is doing.
Actor Sidharth Malhotra praised the promo of Varun Dhawan's upcoming film Main Tera Hero and says the kind of comedy that his Student Of the Year co-star can do, he himself can't.

"I have seen the trailer of Main Tera Hero and I even called Varun the day it came out. It is very entertaining. Varun has got a great sense of timing. I think this film is apt for the kind of sensibility he has," the 29-year-old said on January 29 at the launch of the Hasee Toh Phasee mobile app.

"I can't do the kind of comedy he is doing, it is amazing. His genre is unique. I wish him best of luck and I think it will be a fun film," he added.

At the trailer launch of Main Tera Hero a few days back, Varun had praised the trailer of Sidharth's second film Hasee Toh Phasee and said he is still friends with the actor.

Sidharth stars with Parineeti Chopra in Hasee Toh Phase which hits theatres on February 7.

On the other hand, Main Tera Hero has been directed by Varun's father David Dhawan and stars Ileana D'Cruz and Nargis Fakhri as the female leads.

Farhan Akhtar: Shaadi Ke Side Effects enabled me to do a lot of comedy

Farhan Akhtar: Shaadi Ke Side Effects enabled me to do a lot of comedy
Shaadi Ke Side Effects releases on February 28.
Farhan Akhtar says of all the films he has done as an actor till now, Shaadi Ke Side Effects gave him the chance to do maximum comedy.

"I got to do a lot of comedy in the film. The dialogues and the situations are very funny. I think out of all the films that I have done as an actor till now, this is probably the most humourous film I ever did," the 40-year-old said at a promotional event for the film.

The actor also says that Shaadi Ke Side Effects has the elements of a basic rom-com.

"Actually most of my scenes in the film are comic because the film is essentially a comedy. It has that classic format of a rom-com where things get serious when the resolution of the story is about to happen and all life secrets tumble out," said Farhan.

Directed by Saket Chaudhary, Shaadi Ke Side Effects features Vidya Balan opposite Farhan. It hits theatres on February 28.

Bollywood's celebrity lookalikes

From subtle to undeniable similarities, B-Town has its share of doppelgangers. Jai Ho actress Daisy Shah recently made news for her resemblance to Rani Mukerji. A look at celeb look-alikes...

Aishwarya Rai and Sneha Ullal
Is it a co-incidence or does Salman Khan have an innate talent to discover look-alikes of his alleged ex-flames? When Sneha Ullal debuted with Salman in 'Lucky: No Time For Love', we couldn't help but notice how her porcelain complexion, blue eyes and a pout resembled former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The similarity seems to be Sneha's sole claim to fame as people still recall her as Ash's look-alike.

Dia Mirza and Evelyn Sharma
If you take a closer look at Dia and Evelyn, you will notice quite a few similarities. Fair-skinned with rosy cheeks, the duo has the doe-eyed look. However, the comparison doesn't end there. The two beauties share a common background -- an Indo-German one. If this union gives us lovely ladies like Dia and Evelyn, we're not complaining!

Katrina Kaif and Zarine Khan
Even before her debut film 'Veer' released, Zarine made waves for her uncanny resemblance to Katrina Kaif. The grapevine was abuzz with rumours that Salman Khan had decided to launch her as he was nursing wounds from his relationship with Kat. Though Zarine had the same dreamy eyes, rosy lips and defined jaw line like Katrina's, she lacked the charm, and perhaps the luck, that made the London lass an A-lister.

Amitabh Bachchan and Sonu Sood
A self-confessed Amitabh fan, Sonu feels thrilled whenever he is compared to Bollywood's living legend. A tall frame, strong jaw line and a deep voice characterise the two actors. It was reported that Sonu bagged the role of Abhishek Bachchan's brother in Yuva because of this semblance. Sonu has even revealed that he would love to essay Amitabh's character, if 'Deewar' was ever remade.

Hrithik Roshan and Harman Baweja
Hrithik is often likened to a Greek God. And when Harman arrived, the facial comparisons were inevitable. However, none of the "godly" blessings seemed to have worked in Harman's favour as the comparison proved to be a major deterrent. The young actor was the butt of jokes with some even saying that he was contemplating a plastic surgery for an original look. We wish himbetter luck in his comeback film.

Aditi Rao Hydari and Manjari Phadnis
While Aditi's royal looks and sartorial choices have always been a talking point, Manjari seems to have taken her glam quotient a notch higher post her 'Grand Masti' act. And we have come across many instances when people, including Bollywood enthusiasts, have mistaken Manjari for Aditi. Light complexion, bright eyes, a prominent nose, a disarming smile, same height and figure... the list of similarities seems endless.

Kalki Koechlin moves out of Anurag Kashyap's house
Kalki has been directed by Anurag in Dev D and That Girl In Yellow Boots.
Kalki Koechlin has moved out of husband Anurag Kashyap's apartment and is currently staying in a rented flat in the vicinity. The building she resides in is located in Versova, quite close to the one where she used to stay with Anurag.

A source says that though the two have taken some time off their relationship, they are on talking terms with each other. It is being said that the rented agreement for Kalki's new apartment has been registered under Anurag and Kalki's names.

The source also says that Kalki, who is back in the city after a shoot, moved to the new apartment only recently. "Kalki and Anurag have not split for good; they are just giving each other space. Thanks to their common friends, they are in touch with each other," says the source.

When contacted, Kalki confirmed the news.

A recent injury on the sets of Happy New Year has left Shah Rukh Khan "strapped around the joints". The superstar has compared his condition to his philosophy of life.

"Been strapped around the joints last few days. Realised the truth of life through bandages. Not too tight not too loose, keeps it comfortable," Shah Rukh Khan posted on the microblogging site Twitter on Wednesday.

However, for the actor, the "Not too tight not too loose" philosophy doesn't apply to hugs from his children.

"The not too loose or tight philosophy of life doesn't apply to these hugs. These ones tighter the better," he posted with a picture of him hugging his son Aryan and daughter Suhana.

Happy New Year is being directed by Farah Khan and will release this Diwali. The film also features Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah among others.

Celina Jaitley disappointed with Supreme Court's refusal to review gay ruling

Celina Jaitley disappointed with Supreme Court's refusal to review gay ruling
Celina Jaitley lives in Singapore
Soon after the Supreme Court refused to review its verdict on Section 377, actress and gay rights activist Celina Jaitely, currently stationed in Singapore with her husband and twin children, expressed shock and disbelief at the verdict.

Celina said from Singapore: "The honourable court has rejected the petition as it found no merit in it. No merit in it? Millions of lives are at stake and the court finds no merit in the petition?"

"People with gay tendencies cannot be held guilty for going against the order of nature. Who decides what the order of nature is? To me child marriages and marital rapes are unnatural," she added.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea of the central government, NGO Naz Foundation and others for the review of its December 11, 2013 verdict holding homosexuality to be an offence.

A bench of Justice H L Dattu and Justice Sudhansu Jyoti Mukhopadhyay dismissed the review petition in a chamber hearing on Tuesday afternoon.

However, Celina is still hopeful.

"I hope Parliament will address the issue and all the political parties, regardless of their political and religious affiliation, will come together to uphold the constitutional guarantee of life and liberty to all citizens. And that includes those affected directly by Tuesday's judgment."

The actress also says that her heart reaches out to the gay community in India.

"Thousands from the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community came out in the open to protest when their sexual identity was challenged during the past four years. And that too after the Delhi High Court had decriminalized gay sex.

"Now the gay community is back to Square One. They face the threat of being prosecuted for choosing the partners that they want. I can't think of a greater injustice," she said.

Salman Khan asked to appear before Jodhpur Court on March 10 in poaching case

Salman Khan asked to appear before Jodhpur Court on March 10 in poaching case
Salman had been exempted from appearing in court till now
Actor Salman Khan has been ordered by a Jodhpur court to re-appear before it on March 10 to record his statement in the Arms Act case against him connected to the poaching of two chinkara deer and blackbuck.

In his statement in the court, Salman said he had no arms with him in Jodhpur and they were in Mumbai. "I had called for those arms from Mumbai to Jodhpur only after the Forest Department asked me," he said. The actor also told the court that he had not indulged in poaching and that the investigation officer and forest officer had fabricated a case against him.

Salman had appealed that his arms act deposition should be clubbed with the blackbuck case which is still under trial, but the court ruled against it . Mr Khan was summoned by the Chief Judicial Magistrate after being exempted from appearing in court till now.

The actor is accused of hunting and killing the endangered deer while shooting his film Hum Saath Saath Hain in Rajasthan in 1998. He has already twice spent time in the Jodhpur jail in connection to the case, in 1998 and again in 2007 and has been handed sentences of two and five years , appeals against which are pending in the High court .

Fresh charges in the poaching case were framed against Mr Khan in March last year after first the Rajasthan High Court and then the Supreme Court ruled that Section 148 of the Arms Act, or rioting with deadly weapons, could not be applied to him.

Mr Khan's rifle and revolver were seized by the court when he was first accused of poaching and their licences were found to have expired. Mr Khan's Hum Saath Saath Hain co-stars - Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam - are charged with inciting the actor to hunt.

In November last year, the Rajasthan High Court ordered that Salman Khan's poaching conviction be suspended for visa purposes to make it easier for the actor, who had been denied an UK visa to shoot his film Kick, to travel abroad.

Abhay Deol: Tough to play both actor, producer at the same time

Abhay Deol: Tough to play both actor, producer at the same time
Abhay has paired up with girlfriend Preeti Desai for One By Two.
Actor Abhay Deol, who turned producer with his film One By Two, says playing both parts at the same time is a tough job and he would prefer some other actor in his productions. "But it's a tough job being both. In fact, I would prefer working in some other producer's film and having another actor in my production. That would be ideal for me," the 37-year-old said on January 29 at the merchandise launch for the film in collaboration with the Bewakoof brand.

Abhay says being an actor and a producer gives one a chance to be more involved in all the processes but at the same time, a producer has to sacrifice a lot.

"There are different responsibilities like marketing, budget, distribution and all. As an actor you try and stay in the loop regarding these aspects. But as a producer you have more control," said the 37-year-old.

"You also sacrifice more as a producer, we take whatever we get in barter, we promote our film on any big platform possible. So we can give more commitment as an actor and producer," he added.

One By Two has been directed by Devika Bhagat and stars Abhay's girlfriend Preeti Desai in the lead.

The film will hit theatres on January 31.

Parineeti Chopra: Have become thin with rigorous work-out

Parineeti Chopra: Have become thin with rigorous work-out
Parineeti says she wants to lose more weight
Actress Parineeti Chopra says she may have weighed a few extra pounds in her debut movie but she has become thinner with her rigorous work-out regime.

"When I had entered the industry I was big and used to fit into that size category. Now, I feel I am not, as I have lost much more weight and look better. I don't want to be in that weight category. I am working very hard to become thin. I feel I am skinny now," Parineeti told PTI here today.

Not everyone in Bollywood is ready to confirm when it comes to looking thin. Actresses like Sonakshi Sinha, Huma Qureshi and Vidya Balan are comfortable in the way they look.

Parineeti, however, says she always felt uncomfortable with her extra pounds. "Those actresses are comfortable in what they look like. I used to feel uncomfortable. I am in a visual medium and should be able to compete with every good-looking actress."

"The body type affects what I wear and I can't get best dresses for myself. I can't wear sleeveless, because I would look fat in it. I want to lose even more weight and look better in real life. On screen if I have to wear shorts or bikini for a scene I should have the body for that," she said.

"I am 25-year-old and there is no reason for me to look fat. I want to look great. I am taking care of myself and I am losing even more weight because I want to look better," she said.

However, that does not mean she is looking to get to size zero. "I think size zero is extreme. Even if I starve and stop eating I don't think I would ever reach size zero in life," she adds.

Though there are reports that Parineeti is going to wear a bikini for her upcoming film Kill Dill, the actress rubbishes them saying, "I don't have a bikini appearance at all. That is just a rumour. That film does not require a bikini scene at all. The film is based in Delhi and in Delhi I can't imagine wearing bikini on roads."

But if she ever has to wear a bikini on screen she isn't against it, provided she gets in better shape.

"I don't think I have the body for it yet. One day when I have (body) I will wear a bikini. I just want to wear better clothes. Six months ago I couldn't wear sleeveless, as I was fat. I wanted to get rid of that," she said.

Parineeti is all charged up for her next release Hasee Toh Phasee opposite Sidharth Malhotra. The romantic- comedy produced by Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap is set to release on February 7.

Madhuri Dixit makes tiring action look effortless, says trainer

Madhuri Dixit makes tiring action look effortless, says trainer
Madhuri in a still from Dedh Ishqiya
Actress Madhuri Dixit's trainer Kanishka Sharma, who has choreographed her stunts in Gulaab Gang, is all praise for the Bollywood icon saying she made some tiring action sequences look effortless on screen.

"I remember a scene where Madhuri had to twist a man's arm and kick him hard. I rehearsed with her for a few hours before the shot, but was a little apprehensive. Later, I was shocked at how comfortably she pulled it off. She makes all my otherwise tiring action look effortless on screen," Kanishka said.

The brief given to Kanishka by director Soumik Sen was to design the stunts in a manner that they look both aesthetic as well as realistic.

"It couldn't be as gritty as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon neither could it be as suave as the Matrix," he said. Madhuri trained in rare martial art forms for the action scenes.

"I extensively trained Madhuri for a month in Shaolin Kung Fu, besides stick training, Shaolin joint locking, Kali knife, short stick and of course, close combat," he added.

Gulaab Gang, starring Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla in the lead, is produced by Anubhav Sinha. The film releases on March 7.

Actor Salman Khan arrived in Jodhpur to record his statement in court in the Arms Act case against him connected to the poaching of two chinkara deer and a blackbuck. Mr Khan was summoned by the Chief Judicial Magistrate after being exempted from appearing in court till now.

"Salman has been asked to appear personally before the court on January 29," Mr Khan's counsel Hastimal Saraswat told news agency IANS on January 16.

The actor is accused of hunting and killing the endangered deer while shooting his film Hum Saath Saath Hain in Rajasthan in 1998. He has already twice spent time in the Jodhpur jail in connection to the case, in 1998 and again in 2007.

Fresh charges in the poaching case were framed against Mr Khan in March last year after first the Rajasthan High Court and then the Supreme Court ruled that Section 148 of the Arms Act, or rioting with deadly weapons, could not be applied to him and sent the case back to the lower court.

Amish Tripathi's The Immortals Of Meluha set for a Hollywood adaptation

Amish Tripathi's The Immortals Of Meluha set for a Hollywood adaptation
Amish hasn’t disclosed the name of the book as yet.
Author Amish Tripathi, who created waves in Indian publishing with a $1 million book contract, has cracked it even bigger this time with an American producer purchasing the rights to The Immortals Of Meluha.

While Bollywood director Karan Johar has obtained the rights for an adaption of the popular book, the English rights of the same has gone to an undisclosed American producer.

"I have signed the deal with a US producer for the first book with an option for the subsequent books," Amish Tripathi told PTI on sidelines of ongoing Jaipur Literature Festival here.

"I can't disclose the name as of now, it will be announced shortly," the 40-year-old author said.

Amish Tripathi was given a lucrative book deal by publisher Westland for writing his Shiva triology The Immortals of Meluha (2010), The Secret of the Nagas (2011) and The Oath of the Vayuputras (2013).

The banker-turned-author has now started work on his next book.

"I have already begun work on my next. It is certainly not an extension to the Shiva trilogy, that's over. But this book would be also pertaining to mythology, history and spirituality genre. This is my area of passion," he said.

According to Amish, the domestic film industry and publishing industry were moving closer to one another.

Pointing out that during the 50s and the 60s adaptations of books like that by Sharat Chandara, into films was quite common but the practise had died out.

"Now the Indian film industry is changing. The story is gaining importance. The stars themselves want a good story and they have realised that a good story is important and a great place to get those stories is in books," Amish Tripathi said.

Amish Tripathi said filmmakers didn't mind picking a bestseller, which meant that the story was already well liked.

"A bestseller means that the story is out, it is well developed and has been successful already. You know the risk has been reduced," the author said.

The Cougar Town actress, who split from David Arquette in 2010 and divorced in May 2013, said she still wishes the best for him and they did try their best to work things out, reported E! Online.

"When you love someone, you want them to be happy, even if it's not with you. In divorce you always have regrets. We were married for a long time, so it's not like we didn't try," she said in an interview to More magazine.

The 49-year old actress and David Arquette remain on good terms and are both committed to co-parenting their daughter, Coco, nine.

"Obviously, kids always want their parents to be together. But as divorces go, this is the best one we could provide," she added.

Randeep Hooda: Imtiaz Ali is like a Sufi artist

Randeep Hooda: Imtiaz Ali is like a Sufi artist
Randeep Hooda is full of praises for Imtiaz
Randeep Hooda thought someone was pulling on a prank when he was told that Imtiaz Ali wanted to work with him in Highway.

With the film ready to release, Hooda, 37, looks back with joy on their road adventure which took the cast and crew through six different states of India.

"It was very nice working with Imtiaz. He guided us beautifully in the film. He is a Sufi artist kind of fellow but has the diligence of a school boy so you always feel safe. He really participates and helps you with what you are going through as an actor without interfering much.

"Sajid Nadiadwala and I used to joke that he is such a nice guy that it can't be true. He must turn out a villain in the end but that did not happen," Randeep told PTI over phone from Kolkata.

Produced by Imtiaz's Window Seat Films and presented by Nadiadwala, the film will be released worldwide by UTV Motion Pictures on February 21.

Hooda, born in Haryana, seemed like a perfect choice to play the role but the actor found his Jat dialect would often interfere with the Gujari dialect that he was supposed to speak in the movie.

Hooda, however, enjoyed bringing to life the complex character of Mahabir Bhati. "I speak the 'Jatu' Haryanvi not the Gujari language so it was hard because the dialects would overlap but we had the help of dialect coach to help us. My character is a small time fixer. It is a complicated character who initiates Veera's journey in Highway," the actor said.

Hooda says his role in Highway is one of the most honest parts that has come his way.

"This character is rooted somewhere, it is not generic. It is very close to my heart. I have always been honest in my work but this time there is a certain rawness and honesty that has never been there. It was an enriching experience."

Hooda has mostly played characters that fall into the grey zone. The actor says he consciously opts for parts that are not clean-cut and counts his Highway role among those. "I find they are the best characters to play. I am drawn to such roles and people also see me like that. In all of us, there is a struggle between the good and the bad. It makes it more palpable and real to play such people as an actor."

He is paired opposite newcomer Alia in the movie but Hooda does not consider their onscreen pairing as unusual. "I don't see it that way. There is no unusual pairing. It was the demand of the story that characters are cast in a certain way. It was done to serve the story in the best possible way and I must say Alia is superb in the movie," he says.

After Highway, his slate is full with Main Aur Charles, where he plays Charles Sobhraj, then there isKick with Salman Khan.

"I will be shooting Kick till April or May. It is a big movie for me and I have a great part in it. Main Aur Charles is about to finish, Shooter is finished as well. All of them are interesting films."

Shah Rukh sings to Deepika: Boyfriend ka naam bolo
SRK and Deepika in a still from the Screen Awards
Actress Deepika Padukone is Queen Bee of Bollywood right now. She had a 100 crore hat-trick last year with Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Ram-Leela and she's cleaning up at award shows this year. But what everyone really wants to know is this - is The Dimpled One single or is she, as gossip says she is, dating a certain co-star named Ranveer Singh?

Intrepid journalists have thus far failed to elicit a satisfactory answer to this from Deepika herself so when her Chennai Express co-star Shah Rukh Khan button-holed her on-stage at the Screen Awards held in Mumbai on January 14, the audience held its breath.

In typically SRK-style, the Badshah of Bollywood fired a musical salvo at Deepika right after he had presented her with the award for Best Actress. Borrowing from his blockbuster film Chennai Expresssong One Two Three Four, SRK sang, "One two three four, boyfriend ka naam bol, kaun hai woh, kaun hai woh, uski tu pol khol, media guessing guessing, people waiting waiting, bolo bolo, bolo kaun hai woh."

Deepika trilled back at SRK, "Uff uski ada, I like the way he moves, uff uski shakal, I love the way he looks, uff jo bhi hai woh, I'll never tell you," the original of which lines can be found in the movie Karthik Calling Karthik starring Deepika herself and Farhan Akhtar.

As the SRK and Deepika crooned, the camera found the above-mentioned co-star, beaming proudly in the audience, now minus the giant moustache he was seen with all of last year.

And, no, Deepika wasn't giving SRK a name.

Arjun Kapoor: Was difficult going four shades darker for Gunday
Arjun Kapoor in a still from Gunday
Actor Arjun Kapoor, who will be seen as Bala in the forthcoming movie Gunday, says he had a difficult time during the shoot of the movie as he had to go four shades darker for his role.

Gunday, also featuring Ranveer Singh, is based in the 1970s Calcutta (now Kolkata) and both the actors had to get their body tanned to match the skin tone of people there and make it look more realistic.

"I had it more difficult than Ranveer Singh as he had to go only two shades darker. For me, it was almost four shades," Arjun said in a statement.

It took approximately three hours for both the male lead actors to put on the tan make-up and two hours to get it off each time.

Gunday, which also stars Priyanka Chopra, releases on February 14.

Actress Sneha Ullal, who debuted opposite Salman Khan in Lucky: No Time For Love , is all set to make a comeback in Bollywood following her stint down South.

Salman, 48, who launched the starlet in 2005 film Lucky: No Time For Love, is now guiding her for the second innings in Hindi movies.

Though Lucky: No Time For Love failed to garner attention at the box office, Sneha, 28, was noted for her striking similarity with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

"After my debut film Lucky: No Time for Love I and Salman have been in touch. I was too naive when I did that film. Now that I have done couple of films in South, I am ready to come back here. Its lately that he has been guiding me for it (comeback)," Sneha told PTI.

"He says its important to look appealing in showbiz. He has given me a gym regime to follow and learn belly dancing. He has always pushed me to do better work and I really look up to him," she said.

Now that she has acted in few Telugu films, Sneha wants to be very careful while making choices here. "There have been offers coming my way and I am overwhelmed and nervous at the same time. I am taking my time and want to go slow. As this time there is no room for mistake. I want to be careful as the competition is killer this time," Sneha said.

When asked if Salman is planning to cast her in one of his upcoming movies, Sneha said, "As of now, there are no film offers from him."

Nawazuddin Siddiqui to Kickstart shooting soon
Nawazuddin Siddiqui will reportedly play a pivotal role in Kick

"We were all celebrating Nawaz's (Nawazuddin) big win at Filmfare when we heard this news. We are starting the next schedule with Nawaz in a few days," Nadiadwala said in a statement.

Nawazuddin, who will be seen playing a pivotal role in Kick, recently won the Filmfare award for the best actor in a supporting role for his film The Lunchbox.

Salman Khan to gift swanky bike to fan who cycles 18 kms for him
Salman says he heard of this fan when his film Bodyguard released
Superstar Salman Khan plans to gift a swanky bike to a fan who walks or cycles around 18 km to watch his films.

At the launch of Gixxer bike by Suzuki on Monday, the 48-year-old told reporters about this fan of his.

"There is one fan of mine who I have been trying to get in touch with for the longest time. I think duringBodyguard I heard of him. He travels around 16-18 km from his village to watch my film," the 48-year-old said here at the event.

"He doesn't have much money, so whatever he grows like fruits, he exchanges them for the film's tickets from people. He cycles or walks those kilometres. I can't find him but when I do I will give him one of these bikes. What he does with the bike later is his concern but I am going to give him one Suzuki," Salman added.

His latest film Jai Ho released this Friday. Directed by Sohail Khan, the movie also features newcomer Daisy Shah along with Tabu and Danny Denzongpa.

Pooja Bhatt still waiting for obscenity case against Rog to be resolved

Pooja Bhatt still waiting for obscenity case against Rog to be resolved
Pooja Bhatt says the poster of the film has already got a no objection certificate
Pooja Bhatt's Rog released in 2005, but complications regarding the obscenity case against its poster continues. The filmmaker is still "waiting for an order" on the concerned case even though the poster has received a no objection certificate (NOC) from "all concerned".

"At my now regular haunt - court. Waiting for an order on an obscenity case for the poster of my film ROG which has a NOC from all concerned," Pooja tweeted on Tuesday.

"Even though producers procure an NOC from their association and the censor board for all publicity material they still get dragged to court,"she further tweeted.

But Pooja still has hope that the case will resolve soon.

"I will get through this. Have the patience and conviction to. But when I look around myself at desperate faces seeking justice, I feel despair," she posted.

In January 2005, Pooja Bhatt was booked for using posters with a skimpily-clad South African model Elina Hamman, while promoting Rog.

The case, filed by social activist Vinod Jain against Pooja and her company Fish Eye Network Pvt. Ltd, had been discharged by the magistrate court in July 2008 on the basis of lack of sufficient evidence. However, in January 2011, the session's court had reopened the case and quashed the magistrate court's order.

However, Pooja moved the Bombay High Court which disposed off the complaint in November 2012.

Salman Khan "confused" by audience, box office response to Jai Ho

Salman Khan 'confused' by audience, box office response to Jai Ho
Salman says Jai Ho is a serious film with a social message
Salman Khan's film Jai Ho has received mixed reactions at the box-office and the superstar feels that the response at the theatres and the collections garnered are not "matching up".

"This time we are also confused because the reactions inside the theatres and the collections are not matching up. So it's a very strange thing," the 48-year-old said here on Monday at the launch of Gixxer bikes by Suzuki.

However, Salman believes that their effort at doing something different from their regular stuff might be a reason for people not thronging to the theatres.

"We have done something different, may be people were expecting something like Dabangg, Readylike timepass film to enjoy. Some must have understood that Jai Ho is not that kind of film, this is a serious film with a social message," Salman said.

The 48-year-old says that he is the only person to be blamed for any kind of debacle.

"I will only say that the credit or the blame for my film should come to me and not to anybody else. Perhaps I have failed in bringing in the people," he said.

Directed by his brother Sohail Khan, Jai Ho has managed to collect approximately Rs 61 crore in the opening weekend of its release.

Preeti Desai: Not insecure about Abhay romancing actresses

Preeti Desai: Not insecure about Abhay romancing actresses
Preeti and Abhay will soon be seen in One By Two
Model-actress Preeti Desai says she doesn't feel insecure when her actor boyfriend Abhay Deol romances other actresses in the films.

Preeti, 29, said doing an intimate scene in her Bollywood debut Shor in the City, helped her cope up with these things.

"Maybe if I wasn't an actress and if I hadn't done that I would have been insecure. But since I have done an intimate scene in my first film, I know it is part of the job," Preeti told PTI.

"I think it is nice to admire other people. Why would you get jealous," she said. Preeti says Abhay helped her in understanding the film industry. "We are both different individuals and have our own taste, so we don't always agree on things. I go and ask him his opinion. We discuss things, but at the end of the day I always make my own choices," she said.

On the perception in the industry about Abhay being arrogant, she said, "He is not arrogant. I think he is reserved, private. People judge him from outside but when they get to know him they get a different perception about him." As for marriage, Preeti doesn't see it happening in the near future. "I feel like I am just starting off with this right now, I want to achieve so much. We are happy and secure with each other. Marriage is a full time job and I need to be ready for that part of my life, but right now I just want to do good work," the actress said.

Preeti will be sharing screen space with Abhay in the soon-to-be-released One By Two. She felt it would be interesting for them to come together for the film. "I think one can't presume how it is going to be. I went with the flow. Initially, he was just producing it and then he came on board as an actor. From day one we decided to keep this professional because at the end of the day it's a big thing to make a movie," she said.

Abhay has always been lauded for his acting abilities and Preeti looks upto him as an actor. She said she was initially intimidated to work with him. "The first shot we did together, there was nervousness in me because I wanted to impress him, I wanted his approval. That was initial, but then it was comfortable once I switched into the character. I think you are constantly learning things, I feel I have lots to learn," she said.

Preeti said that Abhay doesn't praise her work that much. "I have seen him praise everybody else. I don't know if he praises me behind my back or not, he has definitely never praised me," she said.

Releasing on January 31, One By Two is a love story directed by Devika Bhagat.

Arjun Rampal allegedly sent legal notice for failing to pay nightclub rent

Arjun Rampal allegedly sent legal notice for failing to pay nightclub rent
Arjun has been blamed for the Hrithik-Sussanne split in Bollywood gossip.
Actor Arjun Rampal is not having a good 2014. First gossip blamed him for the much-discussed Hrithik Roshan-Sussanne Khan break-up, then he was reportedly dropped by his agents, and now it seems he's involved in a sticky legal situation on a separate front.

A nightclub run by the Bollywood actor in a five star Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) hotel in New Delhi has allegedly been slapped with a legal notice after Arjun reportedly failed to pay rent dues to the tune of about Rs 2 crores. The RA.One star was reportedly also sent reminders to pay the overdue rent.

While there has been no official response from Arjun, he did tweet this on January 25: "So I am Bankrupt now!!! According to media reports. So everyone cash out ur checks now. lmao. #ridiculous"

Arjun's nightclub opened in August 2009 with interiors designed by his wife, former model Mehr Jessia and Gauri Khan, wife of his good friend and cos-star of movies like Don and Om Shanti Om, superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

Why Deepika Padukone has no time for Salman Khan

Why Deepika Padukone has no time for Salman Khan
Deepika and Salman have never worked together.
Deepika Padukone, most wanted in Bollywood for delivering four back-to-back blockbusters and scooping a slew of Best Actress awards, was rumoured to have been cast as actor Salman Khan's heroine some time ago.

Salman Khan, reuniting with his Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Hum Saath Saath Haindirector Sooraj Barjatya for 2015's Bade Bhaiya, laughed off this rumour saying that for him to star with Deepika, she'd have to be re-launched - a reference to his recent habit of making films with debutantes like Dabangg's Sonakshi Sinha and Jai Ho's Daisy Shah.

However, might it be Deepika who has no time for Salman, rather than the other way round? While The Dimpled One has gone on record to say she'd love to work with Alpha Khan, she's signed up Rockstardirector Imtiaz Ali's next film opposite ex-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor with who she delivered the smash hitYeh Jawani Hai Deewani.

So, what with shooting for Happy New Year opposite Salman's frenemy Shah Rukh and prepping for her new film with Ranbir, Deepika has zero dates for Salman.

That's Deepika crossed off Salman's list of possible heroines. Will he repeat a heroine now?

Naseeruddin Shah: Some Indians don't reciprocate Pakistan's fascination for India
Naseeruddin Shah was addressing the Kolkata Literary Meet
Slamming those who are against cultural exchanges between India and Pakistan in the wake of diplomatic tensions, veteran film and theatre actor Naseeruddin Shah on Monday said a section of Indians do not reciprocate the "tremendous" fascination and curiosity of the neighbours for the country.

"What I found is that there is a tremendous fascination, there is a tremendous curiosity about us in Pakistan. We do not reciprocate that. We are condescending about that. I say they (those who are against cultural exchange) can go take a hike. I intend to continue whatever I can do in developing person to person contact," he said during a session at the third Kolkata Literary Meet here.

Nasseruddin strongly reiterated about furthering "person to person contact" through his craft. The actor has conducted numerous workshops for budding artists across the border and has also starred in the Pakistani film Zinda Bhaag.

"We seem to carry it with us all this way and its time we got rid of it and there's nothing we can do except further and encourage person to person contact, so I will continue to go there.

"I have been working with students, talking to them, performing with them and if anybody says that I am unpatriotic, then fine I am unpatriotic."

"The film is good. I never thought that my first film will be an action-mystery. I always thought that if ever I make a film it would be a comedy or a love story. But I loved the script of Dishkiyaaoon so much that I wanted people to know the story," said Shilpa.

Jiah Khan case: US consulate seeks Home Minister's nod to probe death

Jiah Khan case: US consulate seeks Home Minister's nod to probe death
Rabiya has approached the US to investigate Jiah's death.
The Jiah Khan case has taken a new international twist after the dead actress' mother Rabiya Khan asked the US to intervene and has sought help from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to aid in the investigations in the case of her daughter's demise.

The US government's legal attaché at its New Delhi embassy and chief of American Citizen Services Unit at the Mumbai consulate Rosemary Macray have forwarded their appeal to the state Home ministry, seeking approval to involve the FBI and provide forensic and technical assistance to the city police in the case.

On Monday (January 27), Rabiya and her lawyer Dinesh Tiwari were called to the Consulate office at Bandra-Kurla Complex to inform her that they had sought approval from Home Minister RR Patil. The offer to help came after Rabiya wrote a letter to US Ambassador to India Nancy J Powell last October asking for help, as Jiah was an American passport holder.

Confirming the same, Rabiya said, "Once the Indian authorities agree, the FBI will assist in the probe," She added that in a week's time, she would file a petition in the High Court, asking for a fresh probe, saying the police suppressed facts into its probe. Rabiya said that the police had not investigated the case thoroughly.

"If Jiah committed suicide, how could the blood in the other room belong to her?" she questioned about the presence of Jiah's blood samples in two different rooms, adding that the police had not explained that in the chargesheet. Another important aspect that the police failed to explain was the injury marks on Jiah's face and neck that were present in the photographs taken by the police, she added.

"I want to find out if Jiah was killed by someone and I want the police to investigate this," said Rabiya. Her lawyer Tiwari also claimed that the statements taken by the police of witnesses were completely contrary to their statements in the chargesheet filed by the cops. "The facts have been changed and there are many such reasons why we want the FBI to intervene."

Movie preview: One By Two

Movie preview: One By Two
One By Two releases on January 31.
After Salman Khan's not so entertaining Jai Ho, real life couple Abhay Deol-Preeti Desai are coming to woo the moviegoers in One By Two, coming out Friday (January 31). A lukewarm response to the former might turn out profitable for the new release, say trade experts.

The love story, which has been directed by Devika Bhagat, revolves around a couple who meet each other while living in Mumbai. They are fed up with their lives and want their situations to change desperately.

The film, made on an budget of about Rs 15 crore, is looking at a fair business opportunity with "Jai Ho" figures not living up to expectations, says Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines.

"If Jai Ho had done well, it would have been very tough for the next film to do well. So this will be beneficial for One By Two," said Rajesh Thadani.

The film, which will be shown in approximately 1,000-1,200 screens all over India, is the debut production of Abhay's banner - i.e. Films. He has co-produced the film with Viacom 18.

However, the actor has hardly promoted the film, a norm nowadays.

The movie, however, made news due to the tiff between Abhay and T-series regarding the delay in the marketing and music launch of One By Two.

Abhay, who walked the red carpet at an award function with a made up black eye signifying helplessness, brought out the controversy in the open.

Singers like Kailash Kher, Sonu Niigaam and Sunidhi Chauhan and composers such as Vishal Dadlani and Ehsaan Noorani hailed Abhay's courageous outburst against the music label.

However, T-series denied all accusations calling them baseless.

The fight was resolved when Viacom 18 Motion Pictures sent out a press statement saying that everything has been sorted out.

Humor, locked and loaded

 Humor, locked and loaded
A still from American Hustle
Is this the year the Academy Awards finally gave comedy some respect?

Don't make me laugh. The Oscars carried on its tradition of slighting the genre in the best picture category.

But the secret for a comedy to get nominated may be to look like a drama. While American Hustle andThe Wolf of Wall Street have the kind of grandiose titles, A-list actors and based-on-a-true-story subject matter associated with prestige dramas, they are, at their best, flamboyantly savage comedies.

Raucous movies about scheming con artists, they showcase broad jokes (toupees get yanked in both movies) but also anarchic comic flourishes that are the opposite of comic relief. They generate tension, revealing aggression you could not play straight. While laughter is said to be the best medicine, in these movies, it looks like symptoms of a disease.

In American Hustle, Amy Adams' cackle inside a bathroom stall of Studio 54 has the desperate force of a primal scream. Her rival, played by Jennifer Lawrence, has the chuckle of a psychopath with a head full of chaos. In The Wolf of Wall Street, the paroxysms of gaping-mouthed brokers are bullying expressions of power.

The comedy in these movies is no light detour. It is a key to the self-conscious, the ugly essence of what's really going on. Martin Scorsese - whose artistic fingerprints are on both, even if he only directed Wolf (David O Russell directed Hustle) - has always been sensitive to the hostility of comedy. When Joe Pesci's character erupted in Goodfellas ("I'm funny how, I mean, funny like a clown?"), what is often forgotten is that he was kidding - well, sort of.

In Wolf, Jonah Hill plays a nasty coked-up stockbroker, Donnie Azoff, who specializes in this same kind of fake-out joke. The movie is full of ordinary, even common pranks that are rife with unexamined humiliations: swallowing someone's goldfish, shaving off hair for money. These establish a culture of brutality and callousness.

Much of the humor is rooted in the incongruity between the real world and how its title character, Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio), sees it. After lingering on his march through a Las Vegas hotel room strewn with drugs and hookers, he waxes poetic about his wedding the next day - "like something out of a fairy tale."

Belfort dupes people for a living, but here he is also the fool - never more so than in an inspired 10-minute scene where he takes a handful of quaaludes with Azoff, reducing Belfort to a primitive state. His face is contorted, he is drooling, his legs have grown so limp that crossing the street he looks like a fish trying to walk.

After mulling his options, Belfort (whose thoughts we hear in voice-over) says he will try to imitate his baby daughter Skylar and crawl, which he does feebly. "That kid makes it look so easy," he says, bitterly.

But there is still more to come: When he reaches the car, DiCaprio flails his body in a circle, opening the door with his foot, failing to get on the seat. This feat of elaborate physical comedy, more than any other, is why DiCaprio won a Golden Globe for best performance in a comedy. In The King of Comedy,Scorsese teased a dramatic performance of gravitas out of Jerry Lewis. But here he pulled off a more unlikely achievement: transforming DiCaprio into Jerry Lewis.

As the comedy builds, Belfort appears to devolve slowly. Once he drives home and opens the door and sees his friend is also unable to talk, they grunt at each other like preverbal beasts. It is pure, delirious silliness that ends with Belfort beating his chest in pride like an ape. It is a victory, but a pointless, dumb one - and when Scorsese reruns the scene from a more objective point of view, showing us what really happened, the achievement becomes more unsettling.

American Hustle generally maintains a gentler comic tone, albeit one with a sexually charged snap. As Manohla Dargis argued in her review in The New York Times, the well-balanced triangle at its center helps makes this "pure Scorsese screwball."

Considering the dizzying number of romantic entanglements, it threatens to tip over into sex farce. This well-made entertainment benefits from two formidable comedic forces that jolted the film off its axis. The first is a performance of wonderfully calculated madness by Lawrence as Rosalyn, a con man's wife.

Rosalyn, whom she plays with live-wire energy, is stuck at home, while her husband carries on an affair, but she is no victim. She is resourceful, frighteningly so, willing to do anything, and then, hilariously, rationalize everything.

The other outsize performance is by Louis C K, who plays Stoddard Thorsen, a put-upon FBI boss. Thorsen keeps saying no to the expensive requests of the swaggering detective, Richie DiMaso, played by Bradley Cooper, who is working on a sting. In most cop movies, Thorsen would be the misguided bureaucrat whose by-the-book attitude gets in the way of justice. But in this world of recklessly ambitious risk-takers, he is a sad-sack loser who doubles as unlikely moral conscience - the adult in the room.

Louis C.K. is perfectly cast, since you could argue that he plays that role in comedy today. Russell wisely turns the minor subplot of Thorsen refusing DiMaso into a ridiculous comic story within the story. DiMaso pleads with him, goes over Thorsen's head and even physically assaults him to get what he wants. Thorsen responds by trying to tell a cautionary tale about ice fishing with his father.

Problem is, in scene after scene, Cooper keeps interrupting to guess the point. It works as a joke about his character's impatience, as well as a satire of the kind of snap critical readings that any artist these days knows well. But the key to the joke is in Louis C.K.'s exasperated face.

Defining comedy can seem to be like hitting a moving target, since its conventions and characteristics can change. Aristotle, one of the first to try, argued that comedy's aim is representing people as worse than they are in real life, but how many would describe it that way today? As the reigning stand-up king, Louis C K has, more recently, expanded the contours of comedy in the public mind, particularly since his television show, Louie, not only strikes notes of melancholy and the surreal but also goes long stretches without a laugh.

That his character (spoiler!) in American Hustle never finishes his story, that there is no resolution, adds an enigmatic element to a movie that otherwise wraps plot lines up tidily.

In an appearance on The Tonight Show, Louis C.K. explained how the story was supposed to end: with a gag involving excrement sinking through the ice. Oddly enough, cutting the punch line madeAmerican Hustle seem even more like a contemporary comedy than it already is.
